REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais is the Portuguese electricity and natural gas transmission system operator, established in 1994 and headquartered in Lisbon. The company operates Portugal’s high-voltage electricity transmission network and national gas transmission infrastructure. REN has expanded internationally through REN International, which invests in and operates energy infrastructure in several markets. In Africa, the company has been involved in the Cahora Bassa Hydropower Plant (2,075 MW) in Mozambique through a minority shareholding in Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), one of the largest hydropower facilities in Southern Africa supplying electricity to Mozambique and neighbouring countries including South Africa.
