The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA) is a South African state-owned entity mandated to undertake and promote research and development related to nuclear energy and radiation sciences. NECSA operates the SAFARI-1 research reactor at Pelindaba, which produces nuclear medicine radioisotopes exported globally, and manages South Africa's nuclear fuel cycle activities. The corporation is involved in nuclear skills development, nuclear materials processing and is central to South Africa's ambitions to develop Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology as part of the country's nuclear new build programme. NECSA's Group Executive Power & Industry was a plenary speaker at Enlit Africa 2025.
